Sultan Oud

164 reviews

Cold bergamot cut with black pepper, then lavender and geranium over damp patchouli. Underneath it goes bone dry — vetiver, cedar and agarwood held in place by ambroxan. No sugar anywhere. Wear it when you want to be taken seriously in a room.

Dry, peppery, adult. I put it on before a client dinner and felt like I had dressed better than I actually had.

My wife cannot stand sweet fragrance. This is the first bottle I have owned that she has asked me to wear again.

Holds up in real heat — it does not go syrupy the way most oud does at forty degrees. Four stars only because I wanted more agarwood in the base than I got.

Frequently asked questions

Almost none. There is no vanilla, no tonka and no praline anywhere in the build. The closest it gets is the warmth of ambroxan in the base, which reads as salt and skin rather than sugar.

For the first hour it has a clean barbershop edge, and plenty of people buy it for exactly that. After that the patchouli and vetiver take over and it turns dark and dry — much closer to a modern woody than to your grandfather’s aftershave.

Better than most oud. Dry herbal builds hold their shape in heat where sweet ones collapse. One pass in summer; you can be heavier with it in winter.

A high-concentration perfume oil, applied to the pulse points rather than sprayed into the air. That is why a 6 ML bottle outlasts a 100 ML eau de toilette. Roll-on and dab applicators are included with every vessel.
